For those of you who are wondering why I haven’t been posting any new material on RealityDisease, here is my answer.
Blogging can be a tremendous waste of time. Even if I’m blogging about the things which matter most– the living Christ, salvation, the Church, etc.– I am probably wasting most of my efforts. It is very unlikely that by blogging I am going to change anyone’s point of view. Either my readers will reject what I say, fail to understand it, or merely nod their head in agreement. After all, when I read various blogs I’m most often looking for people who affirm the point of view I already have; rarely do I seek to be influenced or changed by someone who thinks differently. Most of what I say on RealityDisease is not at all new material or fresh ideas, anyway. I feel as though all my blog accomplishes is the occasional “amen” from amateur theologians with too much time on their hands. For this reason, my blog lacks purpose. Christianity amounts to more than just the sharing of ideas.
I will continue to maintain the blog and may post from time to time; however, don’t look for frequent updates. It will most likely become less “theological” in the sense that what I write won’t just be about the hot-button issues (i.e. Calvinism vs. Arminianism, Premillenialism vs. Postmillenialism vs. Amillenialism, etc.) but things that will bring about life change rather than a mere debate. (Certainly such theological topics are to come up in my study of Scripture, but as far as writing explicitly about such issues, I will most likely include only the essays which have been well thought-out and somewhat carefully written, rather than sporadic ramblings about this and that). If I’m going to publish something, I want it to be worth reading, and I don’t want to contribute to the mess of sit-at-home-and-do-nothing theologians who analyze and contemplate but have no drive to act upon the faith they profess to have.
So, I might be writing less, but I hope to avoid merely academic or argumentative posts. I believe most of us spend too much time thinking and too little time doing. This is not to say theology is not important, as you will find I take it very seriously. But discipleship, not scholarship, should be our ultimate goal.
With that being said, I am not disappearing off of the face of the earth. I will still respond to comments and/or e-mails as they come.
In Christ,
Ryan
