The Hope We Have in the Gospel

With America’s economy in a bit of a crisis, people all around are starting to despair. Complaining about high gas prices has turned into worrying about high gas prices. Food costs are going up. Some have even predicted the fall of the United States. Regardless, things don’t look too great for our country. Yet what a peace it is, as believers in Christ, to know that God is sovereign and in control of all things!

Just today, at work, I transported a 25 year-old man to the morgue. He had hanged himself, leaving a five year old child behind (with another on the way). This was perhaps one of the most upsetting runs I’ve ever done. I saw his family there, in the Emergency Room, mourning over their loss. And I couldn’t help but feel some—if only just a fraction—of their pain. What if someone—me, you, or anyone—would have shared with him the Gospel?

I realize that God is completely sovereign and that all of this is in his hands. Yet I started to think about my own obedience to God’s command to make disciples.

This world is crying out for hope. As things get tougher in our country, the “market” for some type of good news only increases. And yet how can we, possessing the greatest, most earth-shattering news that Christ has died for our sins simply about our lives without sharing this news with others? This world needs hope, desperately. If we’ve got it, it would be utterly selfish not to share it.
